Poroshenko: Weight and NATO’s role increase even more in the face of new challenges in the context of the events around Ukraine

Ukraine welcomes the recent steps of NATO in strengthening security in the world. This was stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at the meeting of the Commission Ukraine – NATO on Monday in Kiev, reports the correspondent of the edition «GORDON».

«I want to emphasize that the weight and the role of NATO increase even more in the face of new challenges to international security in the context of the events around Ukraine», – said Poroshenko.

He noted that we are talking about the Russian aggression that prompted NATO to take measures to strengthen security in the region.

«I can even admit that NATO has awakened, and it gave the Alliance a second wind. The allies even more convinced of the necessity of joining all efforts for mutual protection, the importance of raising defense spending and increase its presence in the world,» said Poroshenko.

Ukraine has intensified its cooperation with NATO in 2014, against the annexation of Crimea to Russia and armed conflict in the Donbass. At the end of 2014, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that requires the refusal of Ukraine of implementation of policy of «non-alignment».

In accordance with the new Military doctrine of Ukraine, adopted in 2015, the deepening of cooperation with NATO and the achievement of the 2020 full interoperability of the Armed forces of Ukraine with armies of the countries – members of NATO is a priority. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be made at the referendum.

June 8, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the bill No. 6470, which has legislatively enshrined Ukraine’s intention to join NATO. On 6 July, the law was signed by the President.

In Kiev today, on 10 July, held a meeting of the Commission Ukraine – NATO. Opening the meeting, Poroshenko stated that Ukraine is not going to urgently apply for membership in the Alliance, and will reform to fit his standards. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Alliance will never recognize the Russian annexation of Crimea and insists on the full implementation of the Minsk agreements.
