Poroshenko: Ukraine still begin to control the border in the Donbas, sanctions against Russia will act

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko declares that the sanctions against Russia will act till the return of Ukraine control over the state border and the withdrawal of all foreign armed forces from Ukrainian territory.

He said this during the presidential debate at the Munich security conference, UNIAN reports.

«The sanctions (against Russia EU — ed) is bound to a number of important things: first and foremost is the return of control over Ukrainian-Russian border. Across this border constantly every day, Russian troops, Russian arms went to my country. If the control will not be returned to Ukraine – would sanctions», — said Poroshenko.

«Second is the withdrawal of all foreign armed forces from Ukrainian territory. We have evidence, and it’s not just dozens of Russian passports, which I last year showed that a large number of proofs: photos from satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, the witnesses of Ukrainians living on the territory that is now occupied, and dozens of Russian soldiers, which we caught and showed the world as evidence of aggression,» said Poroshenko.

Also speaking at the Munich conference on security, Poroshenko stated that he did not agree that we should ease the sanctions, to begin a dialogue with the Russian Federation.

Poroshenko stressed that Europe must be United with Ukraine in this situation and to continue sanctions as long as Russia does not fulfill its obligations.

«I am the President of a country at war. I’ll give you one important fact — you can control the country, just being an optimist. If you are a pessimist, then lose the war and lose the country. In this situation, I strongly believe that the window of opportunity will remain open for me and for my people,» he said.

Poroshenko expressed doubts about the need to resume dialogue with the international community the Russian Federation, and Russia will cease to commit aggression.

He recalled that when the world turned a blind eye to the war in Georgia, this has not stopped Russia in Crimea and the Donbass, in Syria.

«Yet there are opinions that the sanctions do not work, that sanctions are hurting Europe more than Russia. No, sanctions are not a punishment, sanctions are an instrument for Russia to remain at the negotiating table, as no other instruments,» — said Poroshenko.

President Poroshenko said that the struggle for Ukraine is a fight for European and world security.

«Europe now passes through one of the most difficult crises, and we can win this battle if we’ll be together», — said Poroshenko.

«It’s not only for Ukraine, we are fighting, it is not only Ukrainian people. This is a European and world security, for which we are fighting, it’s security in every country,» said the President to the conference participants.

Poroshenko recalled the statement of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in interview to German newspaper Bild that his «borders are irrelevant» and urged international partners to preserve the unity. «We should be together», — said the President of Ukraine.

The presidents of Ukraine and Lithuania have discussed the situation in the Donbass

Through participation in the Munich conference on safety issues the President Petro Poroshenko held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite.

The head of the Ukrainian state informed his Lithuanian counterpart on the current situation in the Donbass, noting the need to continue sanctions for non-fulfillment of Russia’s obligations under the Minsk agreements.

Poroshenko urged European partners to maintain solidarity in support of Ukraine and counteraction to the aggressive policy of Russia directed against Ukraine, and against the countries of the European Union.

The President expressed gratitude for the consistent support on the part of Lithuania, noting the personal efforts of President Grybauskaite.

He stressed that, despite the ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine continues to implement the necessary reforms on the path to European integration and solidarity is counting on support from European partners.

Earlier in the Western media there was information that because of the crisis in Syria and Libya, the international community may reconsider sanctions against Russia. The journalists of Bloomberg wrote that «the setting of the stage» to end the isolation of Russia are France and Germany, which ends the patience to help Ukraine to achieve commitments under the peace agreement.
