Poroshenko on language education: We must not be passive izunami

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko urged Minister of science and education Lilia Grinevich actively protect the vision of Ukraine on the linguistic norms of the law «On education». He stated this at a meeting with teachers on September 28 in Kiev. The President’s speech was broadcast channel «112 Ukraine».

«I understand that the Ministry of education has already appealed on my behalf to the Council of Europe, Venice Commission. I would like you Madam Minister, that we not be passive junami, and actively defended their vision of mandatory guarantees of the rights of national minorities», – said Poroshenko.

He added that to explain its position to the European partners of Ukraine should make an effort. «You must prove to them and all European structures that the language article of the Ukrainian educational law fully consistent with European practices. It is very important that in this debate we have heard each other: we are them, but necessarily they – us,» the President said.

The head of state added that the law «On education» should not to alienate Ukraine from Europe, and closer.

On 5 September the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the second reading the law «On education», September 28 the act came into force.

The document introduces 12-year school education and the educational office of the Ombudsman, as well as expanding the use of the Ukrainian language in education.

Concern about the language of the article in the law has raised a number of countries: Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Russia, and Bulgaria and Greece.

The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Hungary stated that they would block any further rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU because of the law «On education».

The Minister of foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin noted that Ukraine maintains the conditions for learning minority languages. According to him, knowledge of the state language is a matter of national security.

Press Secretary of the EU high representative in foreign Affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini Maya Kosyanchich said that the Ukrainian authorities should as soon as possible to appeal to the Council of Europe for expert opinion on the new law «On education» section is about the language of education was criticized.
