Pope urged to resume dialogue for a peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel

Need to resume the dialogue, which will allow Palestine and Israel to coexist peacefully, said Pope Francis in a traditional Christmas message, proclaimed from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, according to «Vatican Radio».

«On this festive day, let us cry out to the Lord for peace in Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land; let us pray that among the parties prevailed the will to resume dialogue and it was possible finally to reach a negotiated solution that will allow the two States to coexist peacefully within the borders, harmonized and internationally recognized. The Lord will support the efforts of the members of the world community who genuinely want to help this ravaged land to gain, despite serious obstacles, the long-awaited reconciliation, justice and security,» he said.

On 6 December, the President of the United States Donald trump has officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced the postponement of the U.S. Embassy in this city.

18 December the US vetoed a resolution of the UN Security Council, which rejected unilateral actions of Washington against the status of Jerusalem. The document was submitted by the delegation of Egypt. The initiative was supported by all members of the UN security Council, including Ukraine, except the United States.

20 Dec trump warned that Washington may reduce financial assistance to countries that do not support the U.S. position on the status of Jerusalem.

On 21 December the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, urging to abandon the change of status of Jerusalem. Against the document made by the US, Israel, Honduras, Guatemala, Nauru, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau and Togo. Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Turkmenistan and a number of delegations did not participate in the vote. Russia supported the resolution.

On 24 December the President of Guatemala Jimmy Morales announced the intention to move his country’s Embassy from tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem after the 1967 war and considers the entire city its capital. The Palestinians, in turn, want to declare East Jerusalem the capital of their state.

The administrative capital of Israel is now in tel Aviv and the Palestinian authority based in Ramallah.
