The head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill after the meeting on 12 February signed a joint Declaration, which called on the international community to protect Christians in the Middle East, reports «Radio Freedom».
The document notes that in Syria and Iraq, the violence has claimed thousands of lives, leaving millions of people without shelter and livelihoods. Pope and Patriarch of the ROC, «a required large-scale humanitarian assistance to the people in these countries and many refugees».
They also called on the international community to take immediate action to prevent the eviction of Christians from the Middle East.
Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis want to come together to testimonies about the shared heritage of the Church and together to respond to the challenges of the modern world.
«Our gaze is directed primarily to those regions of the world where Christians are persecuted. In many countries of the Middle East and North Africa are our brothers and sisters in Christ exterminated whole families, villages and towns. Their temples are subjected to barbarous destruction and looting shrines desecrated, monuments — destruction. In Syria, Iraq and other Middle East countries we are pain observed mass Exodus of Christians from the land where began the spread of our faith and where they have lived since Apostolic times, together with other religious communities», — stated in the text.
They also call on the international community «for immediate action to prevent further marginalization of Christians from the Middle East».
«We urge the international community to unite to end the violence and terrorism, and at the same time using dialogue to promote the early establishment of civil peace. Required large-scale humanitarian aid to the suffering people and many refugees in neighboring countries», — stated in the Declaration.
The Declaration also States that the Patriarch and the Pope sorry about the equalisation of same-sex marriage with traditional.
February 12, Pope Francis met in Havana with the Russian Patriarch Kirill. This is the first meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Pontiff made a stop in Cuba on his way to Mexico, where he’s going to visit. The Patriarch of the ROC on February 11 arrived in Havana and will start Latin American tour from here.
Question on the meeting of Pope and Patriarch discussed the two churches for about 20 years.
In a statement, the Vatican and the Moscow Patriarchate prior to the meeting in Cuba this event is characterized as «a sign of hope for all people of good will».
