Parubiy submitted to the Parliament a draft law obliging MPs to speak at work only in the Ukrainian language

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy has registered a bill on amendments to the Parliament regulations, which obliges the deputies to use only the Ukrainian language in the course of its work, including in the plenary.

According to information on the official website of the Parliament, bill No. 6059 «On amendments to article 2 of the regulations of the Verkhovna Rada» was on Wednesday 8 February.

«The changes relate to the mandatory use of the state – Ukrainian language by MPs in the performance of their duties», — reports «Interfax-Ukraine» citing a source close to the Verkhovna Rada.

Earlier on Wednesday, 8 February, Parubiy during the plenary meeting of the Parliament reminded that they should discuss the bill in the Parliament session hall in the Ukrainian language.

«I beg you not to create a conflict where there is none. There is the Constitution of the country in which it is determined that the state language is Ukrainian — one state language… and is impossible to represent in the Parliament of any European country, with all due respect to national minorities to the Parliament acted on the other, and not in the state language. Want a translation? Advance report, translation will be provided and you will so to speak», — said Parubiy in response to a debate between MPs, what language to speak in the Parliament.

The controversy on the language issue was caused by the speech in Russian representative of the faction «Opposition bloc», who explained that speaks in Parliament «in the language in which he communicates with voters.»

Later, the speaker of the Parliament announced that «as of today there is no mechanism to provide such a translation.» He believes that it is necessary to consult how to act in such situations.
