Parliament asks the Israeli Knesset to recognize the Holodomor as genocide

Ukraine MPs call on the Israeli Parliament, which this week have to consider the recognition of the Holodomor in Ukraine as genocide, to take a positive decision.

Such calls sounded in the Verkhovna Rada during consideration of the draft resolution on holding parliamentary hearings on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the tragedy at Babi Yar, reports «Ukrainian truth».

The Parliament of Ukraine approved the resolution 252 votes. Before speaking from the rostrum, people’s deputies Oleg Lyashko (Radical party) and George Legwinski (people’s front) called on the Knesset to recognize the Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians.

«We count on the support of the Knesset, which this week will consider a resolution on recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. We are convinced that the Knesset members will take the appropriate historic decision and will be the 25th country in the world, which will pay tribute to and memory of millions of Ukrainians, the innocent victims of the Stalinist regime,» — said Lyashko.

In turn, MP Legwinski noted that the issue of recognition of Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainians were brought before the Knesset after the Deputy speaker of the Knesset visited Kiev and activities to commemorate the victims of Babi Yar.

«I would like to thank (Israel – ed.) for the fact that yesterday, despite the fact that Russian missiles are located, as the leadership of Israel, 20 meters from the border of Israel — yesterday they voted that the Crimea is Ukraine», — Legwinski.

As reported, the Israeli Parliament this week will consider a resolution recognizing Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Such a decision was approved on Monday, the Presidium of the Knesset, led by Chairman Yuli Yoel Edelstein.

In November 2015 the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a decree «On measures in connection with Day of memory of victims of Holodomor», which aims to ensure the commemoration of the victim of the genocide of the Ukrainian people – the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine committed by the totalitarian repressive Stalinist regime, and the famines of 1921-1922 and 1946-1947 in Ukraine.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the resolution on recommendations of parliamentary hearings «the 75th anniversary of the tragedy of Babi Yar: the lessons of history and modernity» (No. 5349).

For this decision voted 252 deputies out of 350 registered in the session hall.

Participants of parliamentary hearings recommended to the Parliament and government to provide in the state budget of Ukraine, starting from 2017, funds for the operation and development of the National historical-memorial preserve «Babi Yar»; to support scientific research of the tragedy of Babi Yar, the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity committed by totalitarian regimes in the territory of Ukraine.

In addition, the document contains a recommendation to provide annual events in memory of the victims of the Babi Yar tragedy.

In accordance with the recommendations, the Ministry of culture should ensure that, in particular, the creation, with the participation of leading specialists and members of the public, the concept of beautification of the memorial site of Babi Yar and strategy development reserve, and open in the Kyiv Memorial Museum of the victims of Babi Yar at the address: Melnikova str., 44.

The Ukrainian Institute of national remembrance tasked to develop, with the involvement of the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the list of persons who risk their lives and the lives of their families, saved lives during the tragic events of Babi Yar.

The Ministry of foreign Affairs to inform the international community on measures to commemorate the victims of Babi Yar in Ukraine, in particular, by holding the foreign diplomatic institutions of events dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Babi Yar tragedy.

In addition, the relevant departments are encouraged to provide the creation of information projects, films, publications for the formation in the Ukrainian society an atmosphere of tolerance on the basis of awareness of the historical lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides, and the perpetuation of the memory of Babi Yar as a symbol of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.

The Kyiv city state administration recommended the transfer of all non-residential buildings (home gardener) on Melnikova street, 48-B, in Kiev, in the free use of the National historical-memorial preserve «Babi Yar»; make the decision on the transfer of the land plot at the address: Kyiv, Melnikova street, 44, is the National historical memorial reserve «Babi Yar» and carry out the improvement of the Babi Yar and adjacent areas.

The resolution also provides that the Cabinet of Ministers before September 1, 2017 shall inform the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the implementation of the recommendations of the parliamentary hearings.

The decree comes into force from the date of its adoption.
