Panama has suspended the investigation into the offshore scandal

The Panamanian government has suspended the investigation into the leak of documents local legal company Mossack Fonseca providing legal assistance in registration of offshore companies. The archive of the company came to the public in April of last year and was called in the press «Panama records». The documentation showed that the world’s leaders and celebrities have used the services of MossFon to create offshore accounts, in particular, for the purpose of money laundering and tax evasion. After a leak in a number of countries, was launched investigation on the basis of data contained in the dossier.

According to the public Prosecutor of Panama, the reason for the suspension of the investigation was the complaint against the investigators, lodged with the constitutional court of the country. In the opinion of the author, the participants in the investigation violate the Constitution, reports the BBC Russian service.

The Prosecutor’s office of Panama did not specify who exactly made the complaint and how, according to the applicant, the actions of the investigation contradict the Panamanian Constitution. The investigation will not be conducted until then, until the constitutional court will consider the complaint.

Mossack Fonseca was at the center of the scandal in the spring of 2016. The international consortium of investigative journalism (ICIJ) 3 APR 2016 released excerpts from 11.5 million documents from the archive MossFon with data on offshore accounts of its clients. In the press this leak is called «the Panama document» (Panama Papers), or «Panama records».

From the archive showed that Mossack Fonseca had helped clients launder money to avoid sanctions and tax evasion. In the published documents was the names of current and former world leaders, cultural figures and athletes.

In a large-scale investigation, based on documents Mossack Fonseca, was attended by several publications and organizations, including, in addition to the ICIJ, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, The Guardian and the Centre for the study of corruption and organized crime (Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project OCCRP).

One of the founders of the company Mossack Fonseca Ramon Fonseca called the leaked documents «criminal offense» and «attack» on the Panama. According to him, the documents hit the press as a result of «limited cracking». Fonseca also noted that earlier Mossack Fonseca has never been «convicted or charged with any violations.»

However, the General Prosecutor’s office of Panama announced the start of the investigation on the basis of the facts contained in «Panamanian documents».

In may of the same year, the international consortium for investigative journalism has opened access to full database «of Panamanian documents». It has information about 320 thousands of offshore companies, resulting from the leakage of Mossack Fonseca. According to the consortium, more than 11.5 thousand companies that fall into the database, connected with Russia. The documents featured 12 current and former world leaders, politicians 128 and 29 billionaires on the Forbes list, as well as 13 Russian officials and deputies.
