U.S. President Barack Obama has officially announced the allocation of 3.4 billion dollars to support allies in the Organization North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) due to the Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.
This was reported at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine with reference to the press service of the White House, reports UNIAN.
«Since the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine, almost two years ago, the United States took decisive and lasting steps to reassure our allies and strengthen the capacity of the collective security of NATO in a changing European security space,» he said.
As noted by the President of the United States, according to the European initiative identity defense support for the continent (European Reassurance Initiative), the United States has increased its military presence in Europe; held additional bilateral and multilateral military exercises; improved the military infrastructure of U.S. forces and allies; have placed more U.S. equipment in Europe intensified efforts to strengthen military capabilities and interoperability of allies and partners.
Obama reminded that the US has funded the operation «Atlantic determination», which us forces maintain a permanent presence in the air, sea and land in Central and Eastern Europe.
«The United States has also taken important steps to implement the «action Plan in preparedness» (Readiness Action Plan) — program of measures to reassure allies and adapt NATO to the long-term requirements in the field of security that was agreed at the Welsh summit in 2014 in terms of aggressive stance that Russia has been on the periphery of the Alliance,» he said.
The U.S. President said that these steps were important but they were not sufficient, and that is why the Alliance must make an extra effort.
«As we approach the NATO summit in Warsaw, clearly understood that the United States and our allies should do more to promote our common security in support of a Europe that is whole, free and undivided. That is why my Administration has announced a fourfold increase in the funding of the European initiative identity defense support for the continent at the 2017 fiscal year,» he said.
In this regard, the American leader said that this initiative provides funding at the level of 3,4 billion dollars, which «should allow the United States to strengthen a stable military situation in Europe and to improve the military’s ability to maintain obligations under article 5 (NATO Treaty) to the members of NATO.» Obama said that such steps, the U.S. should make clear that America will stand resolutely with the members of the Alliance in protecting not only the territory of the countries-members of NATO, but also to uphold the General principles of international law and order.
