Norway first in the world to abandon the FM radio and switched to digital audio

Norway December 13, the world’s first completely abandoned FM network in favour of digital radio, reported by the local newspaper Fremover.

The transition to digital broadcast in the DAB format in the country began in January of this year. The last FM station was off in the Northern regions, noted The Local.

The Norwegian authorities claim that the cheaper DAB service offers better sound quality, broader coverage, allows students to follow programmes they missed.

However, two thirds of Norwegian citizens, according to opinion polls, unhappy with the refusal of FM broadcasting. They fear they may be denied access to warnings about emergencies (when there is insufficient capacity broadcast DAB signal disappears completely, but FM is still available, albeit with interference). Also the Norwegians complain of the need to buy an expensive adapter to receive digital radio, wrote «Medusa».

The percentage of Norwegians who daily listen to the radio, over the past year decreased by 10%, and public TV and radio company NRK has lost 21% of its audience.
