New UN Secretary-General can help to open Special office in the Donbass

Permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko sure that the new Secretary General , antónio Guterres, can help with the opening of a Special office of the UN support in the Donbas. This was the Ukrainian diplomat said in an interview with the news Service of the UN, published 26 Jan.

«The year before, former UN Secretary-General’s idea was to open a special office of the UN, who would monitor the implementation of the Minsk agreements. But this was not done because of certain reasons. However, we believe that this question could help solve the current Secretary,» said the Ukrainian diplomat.

He noted that in Europe, mainly for security issues, the OSCE is responsible, «but the intervention of the UN, in the best sense of the word, would not hurt».

While Yelchenko stressed that where «there is a large field for thought».

Interview with the head of the Ukrainian mission was mainly concerned with, upcoming in February of Ukraine’s chairmanship in the UN Security Council. In this regard, the diplomat said that the agenda would consist of «two parts or two elements.»

Among them the traditional questions that are typically included in the program, as well as the initiatives of the Ukrainian side. This will include participation in the meetings of the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin. In addition, «there are plans» to participate in the debate of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

Among the topics that will be launched for discussion by the Ukrainian side — issues terrorist threats to critical infrastructure, and security in Europe and role of the UN in conflict resolution in this part of the world.
