Researcher of the group of nature conservation «Rocha» Avinash Krishnan said that elephants are very good swimmers, however swimming is 16 km from the shore is to them an ordeal, as the animal spends a lot of energy and is going fast. Besides, salt water is not very useful for elephant skin, so the human intervention in this situation was justified.

Swimming elephants use their trunks as a snorkel. They also have a unique lung structure that allows them to withstand the pressure fluctuations above and below the water.
