NASA may send a mission to the comet Churyumov — Gerasimenko

National aerospace Agency of the USA (NASA) to send a mission to the comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko. This was reported on the Agency’s website.

NASA has chosen two candidates for the robotic mission.

Drone Dragonfly («Dragonfly») can send to Saturn’s moon Titan, while the probe CAESAR (Comet Sample Return Astrobiology Exploration) is preparing to launch to the comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

The Agency will determine which mission to launch by the spring of 2019.

CAESAR may collect samples of materials from the surface of a comet and return them to Earth.

Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko was opened on 23 October 1969, by Klim Carumonam in Kiev as a result of studying photographic plates of comet 32P/comas Sola taken by Svetlana Gerasimenko at the Alma ATA Observatory in September of the same year.

12 November, the European module «Philae» successfully landed on the comet, separated from the apparatus «Rosetta». The mission lasted 10 years and the descent to the surface of the comet about seven hours. The landing was the first time planting an artificial object on a celestial body.
