The Chairman of the Transcarpathian regional state administration Gennady Moskal will ask for people’s deputies from Transcarpathia not to vote for the abolition of the moratorium on the export of raw wood abroad. About this he wrote on his page in Facebook.
The reaction of Muscovite was caused by the fact that yesterday, November 24 the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that Ukraine in the coming weeks, lifting the ban on the export of unprocessed timber. In response, the EU is ready to provide us the latest tranche of financial aid of 600 million euros.
«I want to say a few words about how the head of the only region in Ukraine where forest cover occupies more than half of the territory, and the common region, which is not sold in Europe neither fuel nor timber. So maybe take out from this country all that has at least some value, sell for pennies, while they themselves remain naked and barefoot in the center of Europe?», asks the Governor.
«About 600 million euros of aid after six months will be forgotten, and cut down and sold for pennies Carpathians will become a national shame for many years. Therefore, let the European partners do not give us ultimatums and not turn Ukraine into a raw material appendage. Personally, I’m going to ask for people’s deputies from Transcarpathia not to vote for the abolition of the moratorium on the export of raw wood abroad», — said Moskal.
Recall, Ukraine imposed a moratorium on timber exports as the only possible at that time measure, allowed to restore order in the sphere of the deforestation and trafficking of forest products.
This decision caused a lot of criticism from the EU. In particular, the European Commissioner for trade Cecilia malmström stated that the moratorium is contrary to the norms of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
In turn, the head of the EU delegation in Ukraine, Yug Mingarelli noted that the lifting of the moratorium is the main condition of allocation of funds.
Agreed with him and the head of the trade sector of the EU delegation to Ukraine Nicholas Burge. According to him, the rejection of the lifting of the moratorium could lead to the refusal of some countries to approve the European Commission proposal on the extension of the quotas for Ukrainian products.
In Ukraine a unified position regarding the moratorium on the export of timber there.
The first Deputy Prime Minister Stepan Kubiv said that if the extension of the moratorium on timber exports will lead to increased processing of timber in the country, it would be beneficial for Ukraine, but Kiev can do without the macro-financial assistance of the European Union.
On 24 November the European Commission President Juncker stressed that the EU looks forward to the removal of Ukraine in the coming weeks, the moratorium on timber exports imposed in 2015 for a period of 10 years. According to Juncker, the lifting of the moratorium will be a key condition of granting Ukraine the next tranche of macro-financial assistance in the amount of 600 million euros.
