More than half of Ukrainians support EU membership and are waiting for a visa-free regime — a survey

Half the population of Ukraine believes that the country will benefit from accession to the European Union.

This is evidenced by the results of sociological research conducted by Fund «Democratic initiatives name Ilka Kucheriv» together with sociological service of the Razumkov Center.

«50.3% of Ukrainian citizens believe that Ukraine would benefit from joining the EU, 26.1% of respondents believe that will lose, and 23.6% did not answer this question», – has sounded the data of the survey political analyst of the Fund «Democratic initiatives» Maria Zolkina during the presentation of the study.

According to Zykinoj, the main benefits from EU membership, 38.6% of Ukrainians consider the possibility of free movement of people abroad, 36.8 percent – increase standard of living, 33,7% – free access of youth to study in universities of member States of the EU.

Nearly one in four Ukrainians (24%) believes that EU membership will contribute to the implementation of internal reforms in Ukraine. 22% of respondents believe that any benefits from Ukraine’s membership in the EU will not have.

At the same time, the main negative consequences from the EU membership according to the population may be the emigration of Ukrainians abroad (33.1%) and the deterioration of relations with Russia and other CIS countries (27.5 per cent). Also there is a concern that this will lead to increased levels of unemployment (18.2 per cent), loss of Russian markets (17.2%) and the decline in living standards of people (16.5 per cent). 16.8% of respondents believe that no negative consequences from Ukraine’s accession to the EU will not be.

The study was conducted from 14 to 22 November 2015 in all regions of Ukraine except the occupied territories. Respondents 2009 respondents at the age from 18 years. The sampling error is 2.3%.

The idea of Ukraine joining the Customs Union with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan does not enjoy much support among the population of Ukraine: if a referendum on this issue was held in December 2015 for the Ukraine joining the customs Union would have voted 17% of the Ukrainian population, against — 57%, and 26 % are undecided or would not participate in such a referendum.

The introduction of a visa-free regime is important for 57% of Ukrainians — this position is held by the majority of citizens from the Western (80%) and Central (64%) macro-regions.

At the same time, in the South public opinion about the importance of visa-free regime balances approximately equal division between those for whom the opportunity to travel without visas important (44%), and those for whom it doesn’t matter (47%).

In the East and in Donbas important visa-free regime is considered by 39% of local residents, and the majority in both of these regions (55-56%) did not believe that the abolition of the visa regime is a significant step.

Moreover, sociologists pointed out that if in 2016 will be introduced visa-free regime with the EU, the stated readiness to use it to travel to Schengen countries ranges from 18% among the residents of Donbas to 45% of the inhabitants of the West.

The main purpose with which the inhabitants of any of the macroregion would be willing to travel to the Schengen area is tourism.
