Mingarelli advises Ukraine to address with the law on education in the Council of Europe or Venice Commission

The Ukrainian authorities should be referred to the Council of Europe or Venice Commission for assessment of language provisions of the education act. About it on September 28, said the head of delegation of European Union to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli, UNIAN reports.

He expressed the hope that «this situation will be resolved very quickly.»

«As I understand it, the Minister of education of Ukraine will visit Strasbourg on 6 October to discuss this issue with Secretary General of the Council of Europe», – said the EU Ambassador.

Mingarelli sure that «Ukrainian authorities will take the necessary steps in order to reassure everyone.»

The EU Ambassador did not comment on the claims of Hungary on the intention to block all European integration of Ukraine.

On 5 September the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the second reading the law «About education». On 25 September it was signed by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. September 28, the initiative came into force.

Concern about the language of the article in the law has raised a number of countries: Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Russia, and Bulgaria and Greece.

The Minister of foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin noted that Ukraine maintains the conditions for learning minority languages. According to him, knowledge of the state language is a matter of national security.

The Ministry of education of Ukraine plans to send the law for expertise to the Venice Commission.
