The OSCE representative on freedom of the media Dunja Mijatovic condemned the deterioration of the situation with freedom of speech in conflict-affected regions of Ukraine. This is stated in its statement, published on the website of the OSCE, Ukrainian Pravda wrote.
«After the latest report of the head of the Special monitoring mission of the OSCE representative on freedom of the media Dunja Mijatovic on Tuesday, January 24, condemned the continuing deterioration in the freedom and safety of journalists in conflict-affected parts of Ukraine», — reported in the organization.
Ambassador Ertugrul Apakan , on 19 January, in particular, reported evidence of prolonged restriction of freedom of expression and freedom of the media in areas controlled by the government of Ukraine, including the prohibition of more than 350 web sites, as well as the continued restriction of access of Ukrainian printed media, radio and television.
Of particular concern, he said, cause long-term threats and intimidation of employees of the mass media and the arrests of bloggers Edward Nadeljaev and Gennady Buinitskogo.
According to Mijatovic, as in the case of Crimea, prolonged deterioration of the situation with freedom of speech and free media in conflict-affected areas of Ukraine is very disturbing.
In addition, the OSCE representative once again reminded of the situation with the Crimean journalist Nikolai Semenov, who faces up to 5 years in a Russian prison.
«The case Semeny reminds us all about the oppressive practices to silence its critics in the Crimea», — said Mijatovic.
«Absolutely unacceptable is the persecution of a journalist for expressing his views,» she added, calling to drop all charges against Semeny.
