The Minister of culture Vladimir Medinsky admitted that in his thesis «Problems of objectivity in the coverage of Russian history in the second half of the XV–XVII centuries» could be wrong. He stated this during a meeting of the Presidium of the Higher attestation Commission of the Ministry of education of the Russian Federation on 20 October, according to RBC with reference to the audio recording of the meeting.
Medinsky said that if he had defended his thesis now, then, most likely, would correct these errors.
Also, according to Medina, when the debate around his thesis, he had a desire to abandon the scientific degree. But, he said, the community «Discerned» can take away his science degree, but «don’t take away the books, the films based on these books, the title of Professor and good name».
On 5 April 2016, the Russian expert community «Discerned» Ivan Babitsky filed to the Ministry of education and science of Russia the statement on deprivation of Medina the degree of doctor of historical Sciences.
In a statement Babitsky, which was also signed by the doctor of historical Sciences Vyacheslav Kozlyakov and Konstantin erusalimsky, says Medina thesis «Problems of objectivity in the coverage of Russian history in the second half of the XV–XVII centuries.» «cannot be considered a historical study» as text «is full of gross errors that are hard to imagine even in the course work of the student of historical faculty.» The work of the Minister of culture «can be considered anything, but not scientific research.»
October 2, 2016, the Protodeacon of the Russian Orthodox Church Andrei Kuraev called Medina «a great historian and manipulator», found in his doctoral dissertation on the history of error. He noted that these errors indicate ignorance of the Minister not only of Protestantism, but the Orthodox culture.
As reported by Meduza, 7 July 2017 dissertation Council of the Belgorod state University is not found in the thesis of Medinsky grounds for revoking a degree.
On 2 October, the expert Council of VAK of the Ministry of education of the Russian Federation recommended to deprive Medina of a scientific degree of the doctor of historical Sciences.
On 20 October the Presidium of the HAC recommended to leave Medina for a degree. The final verdict on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission will take the Ministry of education of the Russian Federation and arrange it in the order.
