Lviv police opened criminal proceedings for the burning of the Russian flag

Police have started investigation into the incident with the Russian Federation flag during a demonstration in support of imprisoned Ukrainian pilots Hope Savchenko near the Russian Consulate General in Lviv.

As stated by the head of the press service of the National police in the Lviv region Svetlana Dobrovolskaya, the police opened criminal proceedings under part 2 of article 338 of the Criminal code «Public desecration of an officially installed or raised flag or coat of arms of a foreign state».

Dobrovolskaya noted that the criminal proceedings are opened is not against specific individuals, but in fact the event itself.

This offence is punishable with a fine of up to 850 UAH, or arrest for up to six months, or by deprivation of liberty for a term up to two years.

We will remind, during a rally in support Savchenko March 9, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation on the street Kostya Levitsky in Lviv activists pelted the Consulate with eggs and threw a smoke bomb into the territory.

The people’s Deputy Vladimir Parasyuk, which participated in the rally, broke the flag of the Russian Federation. After that, the protesters burned the flag.

The Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in turn, stated that Russia will put Ukraine account for damage from protest actions under the buildings of dippredstavitelstva of the Russian Federation.
