The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for human rights Valeria Lutkovska hopes that the issue of transfer of Ukraine illegally condemned in the Russian Federation Oleg Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko will be resolved in the near future. This writes Interfax-Ukraine.
«I very much hope that progress will be (in the transfer of Sentsov and Kolchenko – ed.). In this case we are talking about the transfer of these two wrongfully convicted Ukrainians on Ukrainian territory. I am sympathetic to the position of the Ministry of justice, which decided that the best way to pick up, in fact, from captivity, from the territory of the Russian Federation is to use the Convention on the transfer of sentenced persons», — said Lutkovska on Tuesday to journalists in Kiev.
She recalled that this issue had problems, since Sentsov and Kolchenko, according to Russia, have Russian citizenship, although they have not requested to receive.
«I appealed to his Russian counterpart… the Russian government is informed and knows that the citizens of Ukraine who have not had the opportunity to cancel the automatic Russian citizenship… I asked for more (the Commissioner for human rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova – ed.) to intervene in this situation and the most positive solution to the question of the transfer of these two persons on the territory of Ukraine… But the question now hangs,» — said the Ombudsman.
However, she expressed hope that this issue «will be resolved in the near future.»
As reported, the Ministry of justice of Ukraine will initiate the extension of personal sanctions against officials of Russia, if convicted of illegally Ukrainians Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko will not be returned to their homeland.
Earlier, the Ministry of justice of the Russian Federation has denied Ukrainian Ministry of justice in transfer Sentsov to Ukraine, citing the fact that he is a Russian citizen.
Sentsov and Kolchenko have been sentenced by the North Caucasus district military court to 20 and 10 years imprisonment on 25 August 2015, respectively. They were accused of preparation of explosion of a monument to Lenin in Simferopol, as well as the arson of the offices of the «Russian community of Crimea» and «United Russia».
Both Ukrainians recognized as a human rights movement «memorial» political prisoners.
