Lasting peace on the European continent is only possible with Russia, said the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz in an interview to «Interfax» on the eve of visit to Moscow.
According to him, Austria is very concerned about the high level of tension in relations between East and West. Kurtz stressed that the country will strive to «promote open and constructive dialogue».
The Chancellor added that during the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to discuss relations between Russia and the EU, the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in Syria. Kurz expressed the conviction that «lasting peace in Europe is only possible with Russia, not against Russia.»
He added that Vienna wants to help find a peaceful solution to the crisis in and around Ukraine by means of implementation of Minsk agreements. According to Sebastian Kurz, if Austria will see significant progress on this issue, we will consider lifting some sanctions.
The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine began in April 2014. Fighting underway between the Armed forces of Ukraine and Pro-Russian rebels who control part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Economic sanctions against Russia were imposed by the United States, the European Union and some other countries in the spring of 2014 after the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of hostilities in the Donbass. The sanctions packages several times expanded and tightened.
