The Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that the 18th summit Ukraine-EU which will take place in Brussels on 24 November, will address the issues of visa-free regime, the extension of sanctions against Russia.
He declared it on air of TV channel «inter» on Sunday evening.
«I believe that the key emphasis should be placed on the situation in the Donbas, Russian aggression, on the extension of sanctions … on the issues that are associated with the occupied Crimea», — he said.
Klimkin also noted that the summit is expected to be signed between Ukraine and the European Union Memorandum of cooperation in the energy sector, as well as the extension of financial assistance from the EU to support the reforms in Ukraine.
The Minister informed that in addition to the issue of liberalization of visa regime between the EU and Ukraine will be also raised the issue of ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.
«We are now very close negotiations… and we hope soon to reach a positive decision on this issue,» he said.
The summit Ukraine-EU in this year postponed twice.
First, by agreement of both parties, it was postponed from may to September (this is the situation because of the uncertainty of the consequences of the referendum in the Netherlands on the Association Agreement EU-Ukraine, and in anticipation of a referendum in the UK).
In September, the summit was again delayed. In diplomatic circles this is explained by the need to ensure concrete results, in particular, approved by the decision of European institutions on granting Ukraine visa-free regime.
On September 26, the relevant Committee of the European Parliament voted for the introduction of Ukraine in the list of countries with which the EU introduces visa-free regime and the start of negotiations between the three institutions (European Parliament, European Commission and European Council) regarding the visa-free regime for Ukraine.
Soon on the website of the EU Council finally got the official information – the 18th summit of EU-Ukraine will take place on 24 November in Brussels.
Note the Committee of permanent representatives of EU member States (Coreper) on behalf of the Council of the EU agreed on 17 November to positions on the negotiations on the liberalization of the visa regime for Ukraine. On this basis, the Council presidency will begin negotiations with the European Parliament.
