Modern Russian diplomacy has become a «tool of war». The Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said in an article for ZN.UA.
«In modern Russia… functions of diplomacy are often reduced to the function of the Shoe that Khrushchev (the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. – «GORDON») at the time banging on the UN podium. I’m sorry to see the Russian colleagues, at least those that are familiar to me from earlier times as the light head (decent or not is another question) and who now have to work out the agenda of war, hatred, and lies,» he writes.
Klimkin expressed hope that during his lifetime «Khrushchev’s Shoe stops knocking», and Russian diplomacy «will return to its normal function: to open doors for cooperation, and not to spread lies and ignore someone else’s pain.»
«Confrontation with the West, Russia was Russia and not the West and certainly not Ukraine. Russia had a chance to at least try to be a part of the West, but she chose a post-Imperial project, which is self-destructive by nature», – said the head of the Ukrainian foreign Ministry.
He believes that Putin has put the world and himself in a dilemma «either/or».
«Or the Western world protects its own values, without fear of confrontation with Russia, or he avoids the confrontation, agreeing that the dictators in different parts of the world have the right to arbitrary power and aggression. In other words: either we manifest the power (and not only military) and remain in the twenty-first century, or allow Russia to divide the world into zones of influence and to return history to the realities of the twentieth, if not nineteenth century» – wrote Klimkin.
In his opinion, «very comfortable for many in the West,» the idea of equal dialogue with Russia could lead to «an embarrassing disappointment».
«Russia may not be equal to the West, because at the moment is not willing or able to play by conventional rules. It sees itself as the dominant force, having the right and its exclusive zone of influence, and to fight without rules anywhere in the world. How quickly the West is aware of this new paradigm is the big question. When this realization becomes a guide to action – the issue even more,» – said Klimkin.
October 12, 1960 during a meeting of the 15-th General Assembly of the United Nations, Khrushchev banged the Shoe on the podium, demonstrating their opposition to opponents from the West.
