Klimkin: EU starts consultation on «bezveze» for Ukraine

Now begin formal consultations on legislative proposal on how Ukraine will receive a visa-free regime with the European Union. According to UNIAN, this was announced by the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin during an Hour of questions to the government in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

According to him, today all three key institutions of the EU recognised that Ukraine meets all the criteria of visa-free regime.

Klimkin said that consultations also continue between the European Parliament and member countries of the EU regarding how «will be the mechanism of the response to immigration risks».

«Once this mechanism is approved, and there are signs that the debate on this issue is progressing, we will have the way forward on a visa – free regime», — said Klimkin.

As reported, on 17 November, the Committee of permanent representatives of EU member States (Coreper) on behalf of the Council of the EU reached agreement on negotiating positions on liberalization of the visa regime for Ukraine – the Committee confirmed the proposal of the European Commission to grant visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens when travelling to the EU for a period of stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

In addition, the EU Council believes that the entry into force of visa liberalization for Ukraine should be simultaneously with the entry into force of the new mechanism to suspend visa-free regime with third countries. On the basis of this mandate, the Council presidency will begin negotiations with the European Parliament.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko welcomed the decision of the Council of the European Union at the ambassadorial level on visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine and urged the EU to complete the process without delay.
