Juncker said that Turkey’s European integration it is necessary to release from prison journalists

Progress in relations between Turkey and the European Union will not be while in Turkish prisons are journalists. This was in Bulgaria, said the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, according to Reuters.

He noted that Turkey is «moving away from its European ambitions,» which was shown earlier.

According to Juncker, to continue relations with the EU Turkey should show progress «in the coming months.»

According to the Association of journalists of Turkey, which the Agency refers, in prison in the country concluded about 160 journalists.

Accession negotiations with Turkey began in 2005.

In may 2016, the European Commission introduced the European Parliament and of the Council of the EU legislative proposal on the introduction of visa-free regime with Turkey. To do this, until the end of July Ankara had to meet a number of requirements. Among them – the fight against corruption and the revision of legislation on combating terrorism. According to the EU, the existing Turkish laws too broadly interpreted the concept of terrorism, which gives the opportunity for criminal prosecution for criticizing the government. However, Erdogan has refused to change anti-terrorism legislation. In the same month, the European Parliament has suspended work on visa-free regime with Turkey and adopted a resolution which urged to suspend negotiations on the country’s accession to the EU.

In response, the Turkish President stated that his country will not wait forever at the «gate of Europe» and can refuse negotiations on accession to the EU.

According to the Minister of foreign Affairs of Germany Sigmar Gabriel, Turkey cannot join the EU until the country’s President remains Erdogan.
