Italy legalizes same-sex unions

The Italian Senate on 25 February approved a bill legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples. The adoption of the draft voted 173 Senator, against — 71. The bill still needs to approve the lower house of Parliament. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called the vote historic, reports the BBC Russian.

If the project will accept, same-sex couples appears to the right of division of property and inheritance rights. At the same time, from the document have excluded the norm on the right of same-sex couples to adopt children. In this regard, the Italian LGBT community has called the bill «a betrayal».

At the end of January due to the expected adoption of the draft law in Italy held a large-scale protest actions as members of the LGBT community and opponents of the legalization of same-sex unions.

Recall that Italy remains the only major European countries that is still not resolved nor same-sex civil unions nor gay marriage. Gay unions are permitted by local regulations in some municipalities, but at the national level they are banned. Last year the European court of human rights ruled that the absence in Italy of the regulations on same-sex unions or marriages is a violation of human rights.
