On the territory of the USSR in 1960-1990s was created a few radioactive waste disposal sites, which since 1991 has been transferred to the Ukraine without the necessary information about the nature and properties of the waste. Two of the burial ground is located in the occupied Crimea, one near Delyatyn in Ivano-Frankivsk region, one near Tsybuleve in the Kirovohrad region, one in the village of Vakulenchuk in the Zhytomyr region. Also the storage of radioactive waste is in the territory of Donetsk state plant of chemical products, which is under the control of insurgents.
Radioactive waste with unknown activity level have been buried in near surface repositories. Some of these sources have significant activity at the level of tens and possibly hundreds of curies. The exact volumes of radioactive waste, as well as engineering design of the compartments for the burial of the unknown.
In 2013 Ukraine and NATO signed an agreement on the relocation of this waste, in 2015, the Treaty was ratified and in winter 2016, work began on the burial ground «Vakulenchuk».
