In the European Parliament do not consider a policy of double standards groundless delay the abolition of the visa regimes with Ukraine and Georgia on the background of the completion of visa liberalization to some other countries, even without a new mechanism of suspension.
This was stated by the Rapporteur on visa liberalization in the European Parliament , Maria Gabriel, commenting on planned for 1 Dec ratification by the legislative body of the EU bilateral agreements on the abolition of visa regimes with the five island States of Oceania, in particular Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Micronesia, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands, reports «UKRINFORM».
«I want to say clearly: there is no contradiction. When it comes to these small Islands, the decision was already taken in the past, but not this week. This is a different situation than with Ukraine and Georgia,» — said the Bulgarian politician.
Gabriel noted that the European Parliament for its part at this stage, approved all decisions to cancel visa requirements for Ukrainians and the Georgians, and to bind that process to a new mechanism for suspension of visa-free regimes, is an initiative of the EU Council.
«I am always very clearly stated that it makes no sense to directly link the mechanism to suspend visa-free regimes. So, as Rapporteur, I will continue to insist on this,» he stated.
Gabriel emphasized that the new suspension mechanism will be applied to all countries with which the EU has visa-free regimes, and therefore, according to her, the current situation concerning Ukraine and Georgia is not the policy of double standards.
However, it should be noted that visa-free regimes with the EU, island States began to temporarily operate immediately after the signing of bilateral agreements, even before the adoption by the European Parliament.
As reported previously, the member countries of the EU adopted a decision that the visa-free regime for Ukraine and Georgia will work only after approval of a General mechanism for suspending bizwise. Thus, formal approval bezveza for Ukraine will be possible no earlier than this date. However, there remains a risk that for political reasons this process will be delayed for an indefinite period.
At the summit EU-Ukraine European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the issue of visa-free regime in Ukraine must be resolved before the end of the year.
On 23 October, President Petro Poroshenko has promised that Ukraine will receive the decision on introduction of a visa-free regime with the European Union before the summit Ukraine — EU on November 24.
In October, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine on European integration Ivanna klympush-Tsintsadze said that «bezviz» for Ukraine is delayed due to discussions between the EU institutions, which arose around the «mechanism for the temporary suspension of visa-free regime in respect to third countries».
The official website for European Parliament in late November published a forecast date of consideration of the mechanism for suspension of visa-free regime. According services the EU, it can happen 18 January 2017.
