The Tajik Parliament voted unanimously for a referendum on amendments to the Constitution that would allow the President to be elected unlimited number of times.
Citizens will be asked to Express their attitude to the removal of restrictions on the number of terms of the Board President, the BBC-Russia.
According to the current Constitution, Emomali Rahmon, who heads the country since 1994, is not eligible to run in 2020.
The amendments also include a limitation on the activities of opposition parties and lowering the minimum age for presidential candidates from 35 to 30 years, which will give the opportunity to the eldest son of Rahmon, if the father does decide in 2020 to retire.
It is expected that the results of the referendum will be positive for the government.
As reported, the Tajik Parliament on January 22 approved amendments to the country’s Constitution, according to which, in particular, Rahmon, the Leader of a nation (status Rahmon in December 2015), may be elected to the post of the President unlimited number of times. In addition, according to the adopted amendments, to run for President of Tajikistan will be the candidate over the age of 30 years.
Recall that Rahmon has arrogated to itself the status «the leader of the nation» after December 25, 2015 signed the law «About the founder of peace and national unity — the Leader of the nation».
The Constitution of Tajikistan was adopted on 6 November 1994 by «national referendum». The Basic law of the country twice been amended by «national referendum».
