In Northern Ireland, will be held early elections

The British Secretary of state for Northern Ireland James Brokenshire on January 16 announced the dissolution of the Northern Ireland government and the holding in the province of early elections, reports Deutsche Welle, citing dpa.

According to him, elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly for the second time in the last 10 months — is scheduled for 2 March.

The grounds for dissolution of the Northern Ireland government was the failure of the nationalist party «Sinn FEIN» to nominate a new representative in the provincial government. On 9 January the representative of «Sinn FEIN» Martin Mcginnes, who was Deputy first Minister of Northern Ireland, resigned.

Under the law of Northern Ireland, the first Minister cannot remain in office without a Deputy, and then all the government needs to dissolve. These two key posts are divided between Pro-British Democratic unionist party and the «Sinn FEIN», which has long been a political radical wing of the Irish Republican army.

Recall that in Northern Ireland in a referendum on British exit from the European Union, 56 percent of voters voted to remain part of the EU. The average for the UK, 52 per cent voted to secede from the EU.
