In Lviv unknown people tried to burn the Zhovkva castle

In the city of Zhovkva of Lviv region today at night unknown persons threw a Molotov cocktail at the premises of the ancient Zhovkva castle, located in the city center.

As the head reported a press-service of the Main Directorate of the National police in the Lviv region Svetlana Dobrovolskaya, February 23, at about 02.20 unknown persons threw a bottle with flammable substance into a window of the building of the ancient castle, which overlooks the Central square of the city Zhovkva – the area of the Veche.

The townspeople, seeing the fire in the castle building, called firefighters, who quickly extinguished the fire without giving it a chance to flare up. The fire was extinguished at 02.40 hours.

The fire destroyed the window frames on the first floor of the castle. Things that belong to the Museum «zhovkivsky castle», weren’t damaged. Victims of incident no. The amount of damage is established.

At the scene police found the remains of a glass bottle labeled «acetone».

Militiamen hold events for establishment of persons, involved in the attempted arson of the castle.

On this fact openly criminal proceedings under part 2 of article 194 of the criminal code of Ukraine (Intentional destruction or damage of another’s property, committed by arson, is punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term from three to fifteen years).


The Zhovkva castle is a monument of architecture of the Renaissance in the city of Zhovkva of Lviv region, included into the State register of national cultural heritage of Ukraine under №1928 (385/0).

The castle was built by order of Stanislav Zolkiewski in 1594-1606 years as a defensive structure in the Renaissance style. The castle withstood the siege, though several times he took the Cossacks. At the end of the seventeenth century was the residence of Polish king Jan III Sobieski.

Today the castle is reconstructed, however, inspection is only open part of the courtyard and Museum.
