In Latvia school graduates were forbidden to take examinations in the Russian language

The government of Latvia supported the initiative of the Ministry of education and abolished the right of graduates of ninth and 12 grades to choose Russian language in the exams. This was reported on the website of the Ministry of education.

Starting with the new academic year, graduates of the 12th class will take exams exclusively in the Latvian language, and for graduates of the ninth class changes will finally come into force in 2019.

Under the new rules, students will not be able to respond to the subject in Russian. Exam materials will not be duplicated in other languages, except Latvian. The changes do not concern only the exams in linguistic subjects.

The Ministry of education of Latvia stated that they intend thus to help high school graduates «find themselves in a chosen specialty on the labour market, which requires the ability to speak the national language at a high level.»

Only in Latvia there are 168 primary and 108 secondary schools, where teaching is in Russian.

Thus, according to the Ministry of education, from 2009 to 2016 the proportion of students who passed examinations in the Latvian language, increased from 60% to 85%.
