In Japan more than 500 people suffered from flesh-eating bacteria in 2017

In Japan in 2017 525 people have contracted a potentially fatal infection, a vector which is group a Streptococcus, dubbed «flesh-eating bacteria,» according to The Asahi Shimbun, citing national Institute of infectious diseases Japan.

As of December 10 medical institutions in Japan recorded 525 people diagnosed with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which is called flesh-eating bacteria. This is the highest incidence rate since 1999. The number of cases of STSS in 2013 amounted to 203, the figure is growing every year. The reason for the increase in incidence remains unknown.

The symptoms of the disease include tumors, pain in hands and feet, fever, and malaise. The infection spreads throughout the body within hours and may lead to death from multi-organ failure.

Deadly germs into the human body through wounds and cuts, most often on the legs. The antibiotic penicillin is effective only at the initial stage of the disease.
