In Azerbaijan detained more than 50 gay men for alleged prostitution — The New York Times

For the last week in Baku, the police detained more than 50 members of the LGBT community. This writes The New York Times with reference to human rights defenders and lawyers.

According to the newspaper, the Azerbaijani authorities explained that the arrest took place after calls by local residents who complained about prostitution.

However, the lawyer of one of the detainees Samad Rahimi assured that it is not. «Police aimed at gays in principle, but not on prostitutes, or as they say», – he said.

Counsel claims that detainees were tortured with electric shocks, some shaved head.

The human rights defender Javid Nabiyev told the publication «Real time» that the detainees received up to 30 days in jail.

Officially, Azerbaijan is not prohibited homosexual relations. However, in the ranking of the organization ILGA-Europe, which is monitoring violations of LGBT rights, Azerbaijan occupies the last place.
