Hungary did not want to hold a referendum on the terms of Ukraine’s accession to the EU

The national election Committee of Hungary (NVB) rejected the initiative to hold a referendum on the terms of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Committee in Budapest, according to Mukachevo.net.

The question that was proposed to put to a referendum in Hungary was the following:
«Do You want Hungarian Parliament approved the accession Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union only under the condition that the Transcarpathian region in Western Ukraine and in particular the area of Berehove (Beregszasz) was allowed to hold a referendum regarding their territorial jurisdiction (the right to become part of Hungary or of another state, to become a sovereign state or remain part of Ukraine), and administrative status?».

The initiative to hold a referendum was filed by an individual.

NVB unanimously decided that this initiative is contrary to international treaties and the UN Charter that was ratified by the Hungarian Parliament.

The Charter forbids member States to participate in the Affairs that fall under the domestic jurisdiction of other countries.

The Hungarian Constitution also prohibits the holding of a referendum for international treaties. The decision can be appealed within 15 days.

Earlier it became known that the Netherlands may not sign the Association Agreement Ukraine-EU due to a referendum held in the country of tulips, April 6.
