Half a million children affected by the war in the Donbass – UNICEF

The UN children’s Fund (UNICEF) on February 19 reported that the conflict in Ukraine has deep impact on the lives of 580 thousand children living outside the government’s control on the territories of Ukraine, as well as those at the front line.

As reports «Radio Freedom», according to the Foundation, more than a third of that number, and it is 200 thousand children in need of psychological help.

«Two years of violence, attacks and fear have left an irreparable mark on the lives of thousands of children in Eastern Ukraine. At a time of ongoing conflict, we must respond immediately to the physical and psychological needs of children», – said the Chairman of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis.

She called to ensure the safe movement and unhindered humanitarian access to help the children who need it.

According to UNICEF, Ukraine has registered more than 215 thousand internally displaced children. At least one of the five schools has been destroyed or damaged. Last year over 20 children were killed and 40 were wounded. Mortality – triggering explosive items.

The Fund warns that because of the cold and lack of fuel, children at risk of respiratory infections and the lack of access to health services and medicine shortages threaten to increase the number of disease outbreaks.

Since April 2014, according to the UN, in the Donbass killed more than 9 thousand persons, about 21 thousand were wounded.
