Groysman: this year the Pension Fund deficit amounts to 141 billion, or half of their needs

No threats to timely payment of pensions in Ukraine does not exist, however, the pension system in the country needs «urgent overhaul,» said Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman in Facebook.

«This year the Pension Fund deficit amounts to 141 billion, or half of its needs. And even so, 8 million out of 12 million pensioners receive the minimum pension», – he said.

The Prime Minister said that the government compensates the deficit of the Pension Fund from the budget and therefore ensures the uninterrupted payment of pensions.

«But if nothing changes, the deficit will grow rapidly and then in a few years, indeed there is a threat that the state will not provide pensions at all. Therefore, pension reform is absolutely necessary,» he said.

Greiman explained that the government wants a few «very soft ways» to increase the filling of the Pension Fund without raising the retirement age. In particular, it proposes to cancel the «egalitarianism», where increasing numbers of pensioners receive only a minimum pension.

«Instead, we are introducing the fair principle that the pension will depend on the experience – those who work more will get a larger pension. But our main resource – economic growth and further deregulating the labour market. People should receive a decent salary and to be interested to pay contributions to the Pension Fund because it will know that old age will get a decent pension,» he said.

The Prime Minister believes that the steps proposed will allow for seven to ten years to eliminate the deficit of the Pension Fund and to create a resource for future annual increases to pensions.
