Gabriel discussed with Tillerson input of peacekeepers to Donbass

Foreign Minister of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel discussed with the head of the US state Department Rex Tillerson, the sending the East Ukraine UN peacekeeping mission. The meeting was held November 30 in Washington, reported the press service of the state Department.

The head of German diplomacy stressed that the blue helmets would be able to monitor the ceasefire and withdrawal of heavy weapons from the demarcation line between the conflicting parties in Donbas, informed the Zeit Online.

According to Gabriel, his position on the question of the peacekeeping mission «largely» agree with the point of view Tillerson.

The Minister pointed out that Ukraine and Russia have different understanding of the work of UN peacekeepers.

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine began in April 2014. Fighting underway between the Armed forces of Ukraine and Pro-Russian rebels who control part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In 2017, the representatives of Russia, Ukraine, USA, France and Germany have started negotiations on the deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied territories of Donbass.

On 10 November the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that the development of the draft UN resolution on this issue is at the final stage.

On November 13 in Belgrade hosted the third meeting of the special envoy of the US state Department, Kurt Volker and assistant to the Russian President Vladislav Surkov. Following the talks, the U.S. Embassy in Russia announced that Washington and Moscow «have a different concept of» how to achieve peace in Eastern Ukraine, but «joint work in this direction will be continued».

According to «Interfax», Volker has offered to extend the presence of peacekeepers in the Donbas, their numbers and powers.
