Francis was awarded the Charlemagne prize

The award named Charlemagne 2016 was awarded to Pope Francis. The Pontiff will get to it, in particular, for «the promotion of peace, understanding, mercy and tolerance».

About the award announced on Wednesday December 23, the Board of Directors award in the name of Charlemagne in Aachen, Deutsche Welle reports.

«In Europe, where many citizens are looking for guidance, Pope Francis carries a message of hope. In addition, the Pope won the award for his promotion of peace and understanding, mercy and tolerance, solidarity and the safeguarding of creation», — stated in the message.

As noted, the ceremony will be held next year in Rome.

The international award named after Charlemagne awarded since 1950 to individuals and institutions for their contribution to the greater unity of Europe. This year it received European Parliament President Martin Schulz at «strengthening of the European Parliament, parliamentarism and democratic legitimation in the European Union».
