France stated that it did not recognise Catalonia in the case of the unilateral Declaration of independence

Minister for European Affairs of France Nathalie Loiseau, said that her country does not recognize Catalonia, if a regional government unilaterally declares independence from Spain. The Minister said in an interview with French TV channel CNews.

«If independence is declared, it will be a unilateral decision, and it will not be recognized», she said.

In her opinion, the fate of Catalonia cannot be determined by vote, which was organized by the movement for independence a week ago.

Loiseau added that the recognition of the independence of Catalonia would mean automatic exit from the European Union.

1 October, the authorities of the Spanish region of Catalonia has tried to hold a referendum on independence. Many local residents went to the polls, most of which were blocked by forces of law and order. In clashes with police injured 893 people.

The Catalan government announced that the region’s independence from Spain was supported 90,18% of participants of plebiscite. Voter turnout was 43%.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy said that the authorities categorically do not recognize the referendum.

The king of Spain Felipe VI addressed the nation with a call for unity. The monarch condemned the organizers of the referendum on self-determination of Catalonia.
