Four-time Olympic champion in biathlon, Russia’s Alexander Tikhonov considers the fair decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to dismiss the Olympic Committee of Russia from the winter Olympics in South Korea. He said this edition of the Insider.
«The decision of the IOC regarding the Russians more than fair. I believe that we were patted on the head. Only in biathlon for six years, there were about 20 cases of doping – it was happening before Sochi. Sure, we have to bow at his feet, Mr. Bach (head of the IOC Thomas Bach. – «GORDON».) – it will give Russia a chance to start life anew,» – said Tikhonov.
He added that Russian officials, including the former Minister of sports Vitaly Mutko, was punished fairly.
«Rightly punished Mutko, it generally is necessary to send to Magadan… If I were the President of Russia, Mutko would have been sitting in prison, one hundred percent,» – said multiple Olympic champion.
According to Tikhonov, about the problems with doping in Russia, he spoke at a meeting of the Olympic Committee in 2004.
«Begged me to pay attention to these problems and warned that the day will come when we will get embarrassed for the whole world. And that day has come. Long ago it was necessary to adopt a law following the example of Italy, where a doping athlete faces five years in prison,» – said the former athlete.
Tikhonov believes that Russian athletes to go to Games under a neutral flag to prove their skills.
On 5 December, the international Olympic Committee because of the systematic anti-doping rule violations barred from participating in the Olympics in 2018 in South Korea’s Pyeongchang, the national Olympic Committee of the Russian Federation.
