The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine sympathetic to the fact that the EU linked visa-free regime for Ukrainians at the time of acceptance of the EU mechanism for the resumption of the visa regime for third countries due to the migration crisis and expect European institutions to the early adoption of the relevant decisions.
«We welcome the fact that the approval of the 17 November negotiating positions of the EU Council on the EU visa regime for Ukraine and the relevant legislative proposals of the European Commission. For Ukraine it is important that member States of the EU clearly expressed support for the introduction of a visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine», — said the political Director of the foreign Ministry of Ukraine Alexei Makeev on Thursday 17 November, reports «Interfax-Ukraine».
He noted that according to the legal procedure of consideration of such acts in the EU, the next step is to start negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission for approval of this legislative proposal.
The diplomat also noted that the Ukrainian side drew attention to the fact that the decision on liberalization of the EU visa regime for Ukraine will come into force simultaneously with the decision on the introduction of the recovery mechanism of the visa regime for third countries, which will be used in case of increased migratory pressure at the EU’s external borders.
«We understand that the need for such binding is associated not with Ukraine, and with the migration crisis, which arose as a result of events in the middle East. We hope that the EU Council and the European Parliament will make every effort for adoption in the near future relevant decisions», — said Makeev.
As reported today the Committee of permanent representatives of the EU (Coreper) on behalf of the Council of the EU reached agreement on negotiating positions on liberalization of the visa regime for Ukraine – the Committee confirmed the proposal of the European Commission to grant visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens when travelling to the EU for a period of stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
In addition, the EU Council believes that the entry into force of visa liberalization for Ukraine should be simultaneously with the entry into force of the new mechanism to suspend visa-free regime with third countries. On the basis of this mandate, the Council presidency will begin negotiations with the European Parliament.
The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko welcomed the decision of the Council of the European Union at the ambassadorial level on visa-free regime for citizens of Ukraine and urged the EU to complete the process without delay.
