Experts in the field of security has come to the conclusion that the cause of the December incident, when several districts of Kiev remained without electricity, was a hacker attack, BBC reports.
The incident occurred in the night from 17 to 18 December. Without electricity there were few blocks to the North and North-West of the city, and also the Kiev pumped storage power plant (PSPP). 1:05 the work of the substation was restored.
Cybersecurity experts from the company Information Systems Security Partners (ISSP) linked this incident with the cyber attack committed in 2015 in Ivano-Frankivsk region in which no light was 225 thousand people.
The Department of homeland security, the U.S. later officially accused of hacking into the outages of electricity supply in Ukraine. American experts then expressed the opinion that the traces of this cyber attack, with high probability, lead in Russia.
Ukrainian company ISSP investigating for «Ukrenergo» December incident, indicates the linkages between the attacks.
According to the company, a hacker attack on the power supply 2015 and 2016 are interrelated, and also linked to similar attacks in December on other infrastructure, including public company Ukrainian Railways «Ukrzaliznytsya», as well as a number of ministries and the Pension Fund of Ukraine.
Alex, the chief information security officer at ISSP, said that cyber-attacks in 2015 and 2016 a little different from each other. The only difference was, he said, that the attack in 2016, was more complicated and much better organized.
According to him, apparently, in these cases, several criminal groups have cooperated with each other and tested methods that could be applied in other countries.
Marina Kratofil of the Honeywell Industrial Cyber Security Lab, which was also involved in the investigation of hacker attacks, said that the attack in December 2016 was not aimed at the long-term effects or serious damage.
«They could do more, but obviously it was not in their plans. It was more a demonstration of what they can do,» said Kratofil in an interview with Motherboard.
We will remind, in December the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that for the last two months of 2016, hackers have organized 6500 cyberattacks on government sites of Ukraine. This suggests that Russia unleashed a cyber war against Ukraine, said the Ukrainian President.
