Experts named the main risks for Russia’s destabilization in Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict in Korea

Russia in 2018 should use to strengthen its position in the global arena, the strengthening of multipolarity in the world, which coexists with a crisis of ideologies and values against the background of rapid development of information technology. This is stated in the report «International threats – 2018» the Russian analytical Agency «Foreign policy» at the disposal of the edition RBC.

The experts noted that Russia should abandon the «fixation on the threat from the West» as from a relic of the past by going to a balanced approach to international relations and pragmatism. They also believe that Russia is not obliged to seek the return of the superpower status of Soviet times, but must maintain the status of a global player.

The head of the Agency «Foreign policy» by Andrey sushentsov comments RBC explained that the most serious potential threats to Russia in 2018 may become a conflict on the Korean Peninsula and political destabilization in Ukraine.

The Agency experts stressed that one of the priorities of Russian policy should be the normalization of relations with neighboring countries. In connection with the situation in Ukraine, they suggest Moscow to temporarily step aside to «give the nationalist experiment to discredit himself.» For the time they offer to «help nurture a new Ukrainian elite».

In the far East threat experts call the conflict in Korea and the distancing of Russia from its resolution. They believe that Moscow should intensify the mediation policy in this area. The main allies of Russia in Asia, the report’s authors believe India and China.

Program Director of the Moscow Carnegie center Andrei Kolesnikov believes that Russia has no strategy or tactics in foreign policy, and relations with the West are built on the principle of «action-reaction».

«If we want to use pragmatism as a tool, you need to be prepared to make concessions towards the West, but now it’s impossible. While the basis of Russian policy lies in the fact of annexation of the Crimea, changes in diplomacy should not wait» – he said.
