Candidates from the two largest groups in the European Parliament , Gianni Pittella (a group of «Socialists and Democrats») and Antonio Tajani (European people’s party) are the favourites in the election race for President of the European Parliament. This is evidenced by the forecast VoteWatch Europe.
The study authors compared the opinions of each of the 749 deputies of the European Parliament with the statements of the candidates on the issues discussed in the European Parliament during the current term of more than 4700 policy issues.
VoteWatch predicts that the gap between the candidates will be very small. It is noted that the Thaw will win the election if each member of the European Parliament will take part and to vote in accordance with the political position expressed in Parliament during the last 2.5 years.
Tajani and Patella must be confident to reach the second round, gaining about 200 votes each.
In the second round Pittella can get the full support of the left parties (GUE-NGL, green and S&D), and about two-thirds of the members of the ALDE. But it will not ensure him victory.
Thaw can win the election with the support of the majority of deputies of the eurosceptics (EFDD and ENF), and also some Scandinavian and German members of ALDE.
The European Parliament shall elect its President on January 17 after the decision of the incumbent President Martin Schulz to relinquish his position in favor of a career in German politics.
A secret vote. Unlike the previous cases between the EPP and S&D there is no agreement to support a single candidate. Only the position of the eight candidates representing all political groups.
