EU, US and Canada concerned about the resignation of Abromavicius: the message is not encouraging

Ambassadors of European countries, USA and Canada, oppose the resignation of the Minister of economic development and trade of Aivaras Abromavicius and urge the Ukrainian leaders to leave forever in the past vested interests.

This is stated in their statement, the text of which was passed to UNIAN by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine.

«We are deeply disappointed by the resignation of the Minister of economic development and trade, Mr Aivaras Abromavicius, who have achieved real results in the implementation of reforms in Ukraine. In the past year, Mr. Abromavicius and his professional team have made important advances in implementing tough but necessary economic reforms to stabilize the Ukrainian economy, the eradication of chronic corruption, to bring them in line with the requirements of the IMF programme and the promotion of a more open and transparent government», — said in a statement.

Diplomats stress that a stable, secure and prosperous future of Ukraine will require a sustained effort by numerous team of dedicated professionals, which includes representatives of the different forces that the interests of the Ukrainian people put above their own.

«It is important that Ukrainian leaders abandon their petty differences, all left in the past vested interests that have impeded the country’s development for decades and has intensified the implementation of necessary reforms,» reads the statement, which was signed by the Ambassador of Canada in Ukraine Roman Vashchuk, the Ambassador of the Republic of France, Isabelle Dumont, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Christof Weil, Ambassador of Italy Fabrizio Romano, the Ambassador of Lithuania Marius Yanukonis, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden Andreas von Beckerath, Ambassador of Switzerland Guillaume Sourer, British Ambassador to Ukraine Judith Gough, Ambassador of the USA Geoffrey Pyatt.

As reported today the Minister of economic development and trade aivaras abromavicius has decided to resign.

«The reason is the sudden activation of any locking system and major reforms. It is not just the lack of support or political will. It is an active action designed to paralyze our reform work, from the unexpected withdrawal of the protection of the Minister and his family to impose, under increasing pressure, questionable personalities in my team and in key positions in state enterprises», — said abromavicius.

He stressed that such actions considers as «an urgent desire to establish control over cash flows to enterprises, especially the «Naftogaz» and defense industry».

The head of representation of EU in Ukraine Jan Tombinski expressed concern over the European Union by decision of the Minister of economic development and trade of Ukraine of Aivaras of Abromavicius to resign.

This Tombinsky said, answering the journalists ‘ questions.

«We are very concerned that people who aim at changing the system to conduct reforms and to go in this process to the point of no return — that they leave their posts», said Tombinski.

He recalled the resignation of the Minister of infrastructure Andriy Pivovarsky.

He has pointed out that he doesn’t know all the details of the decision Abromavicius, so it is now difficult to give a reasoned review.

«Our first appeal and request to all Ukrainian leaders is to keep the path of reforms. It is necessary that Ukraine was on the path of modernization, has departed from the old practices, oligarchic monopoly of political influence,» — said Tombinsky.

In turn, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius said that the decision of the Minister of economic development and trade of Aivaras Abromavicius to resign «signal, which inspires».

About this Linkevicius said on Twitter.

In particular, Linkevicius, commenting on the statement Abromavicius, said that this statement is inherently a signal, «which is not encouraging, since one of the main reformers, aivaras abromavicius, has to leave the Ukrainian government».

In this regard, the head of the Lithuanian foreign Ministry said that «reform must go on.»
