Dzhemilev: Ukraine will return historical names to the Crimean 70 cities and villages

About seventy names of settlements of the Crimea will be restored within the framework of the Ukrainian law on decommunization. As reported in the press service of the Ombudsman on Affairs of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Jemilev, these would be the names of administrative-territorial units, which were changed after the deportation of 1944.

«About 1,400 names will be considered by a separate resolution, which will be developed by a special working group comprising experts of the Ukrainian national memory Institute and representatives of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people», — stated in the message.

The press service stressed that the right of return of historical names of settlements of the Crimea that were renamed in Soviet times after the deportation of Crimean Tatars from their historical homeland, guaranteed by article 3 of the Law of Ukraine «On restoration of rights of persons deported on ethnic grounds».

«Thanks to the decision of the question at the highest level in Ukraine, their historical names are returned to the status of official names of administrative-territorial units of the Crimea. This is significantly different from what was said the puppet leaders of the occupation authorities Peninsula. It is called «köz boyamaq,» said Jemilev in the office.

On the eve of the Crimean government, controlled by Russia, reported plans to add to existing names of settlements, their historical names. We are talking about 1394 settlements.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially declared on 20 February 2014 the beginning of temporary occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol to Russia. October 7, 2015 President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the law. International organizations have recognized the occupation and illegal annexation of Crimea and condemned Russia’s actions. Western countries have imposed various economic sanctions. Russia denies its occupation of the Peninsula, and calls it the «restoration of historical justice».

We will remind, in October 2015 Dzhemilev expressed the need to adopt a separate law on the return of the historical toponymy in Crimea.

«It is of great importance. If the state decides to rename all these names will be reflected in all world maps. In that occupation authorities in Russia or in Moscow or print, and all other countries of the world. Because they will adhere to international law,» — said Dzhemilev.
