Dzhemilev: the UN resolution will require the admission of human rights defenders in Crimea

Voting member countries of the UN on the draft resolution on the situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and city of Sevastopol (Ukraine) will be held on Tuesday, November 15, during a meeting of the Third Committee of the organization. This was stated on Monday in new York, the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine on Affairs of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev, reports «UKRINFORM».

«Tomorrow will be the consideration of the draft resolution submitted by Ukraine and a further 39 countries on the situation of human rights in the occupied Crimea», — said Crimean Tatar leader during a press conference at the headquarters of the United Nations.

He stressed that the situation with human rights on the Peninsula is deteriorating on a daily basis, the persecution intensified and any improvement is not expected as «occupation regimes can only stay on repression and terror.» The draft resolution just draws attention to the highlights violations of the rights of people who disagree and oppose Russian occupation.

This document also contains a number of requirements of the Russian authorities on respect for human rights, said Dzhemilev. First of all, we are talking about the access of international human rights organizations to Crimea to monitor the situation.

«Of course, the document condemns the occupation, and we do not expect that after its adoption at the UN, Russia would withdraw its tanks and get out of our territory, but, nevertheless, the adoption of such a resolution is very important,» — said Dzhemilev.

First Deputy Minister of information policy Emine dzhaparova said that the resolution is primarily humanitarian dimension. «It is not about our relations with the Russian Federation, and that we are ready to defend world principles under the auspices of the UN. This is our way to help people who today, in fact, isolated in the Crimea», — said Dzhaparov.

She stressed that people who do not accept the occupation authorities on the Peninsula, demoralized and don’t know what to expect. In this regard, the representative of Ukraine stressed that the work of the monitoring group under the auspices of the UN in Crimea «would give the answers to the questions of some countries, who believe that Ukraine would politicize the process, although from our point of view Russia is doing just that.»

Dzhaparova appealed to the member countries of the UN to support the draft resolution on the situation of human rights in Crimea.

Earlier, permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko to the third Committee of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly had submitted for the consideration of the delegates the draft resolution entitled «State of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and city of Sevastopol».

We note that on 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly by a majority of votes supported a resolution on Ukraine’s territorial integrity. For the adoption of the document at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on Thursday 27 March in new York, 100 States voted against – 11, abstained – 5.
