At a press conference on 14 December, the journalist Ksenia Sobchak asked Putin a question about Navalny, who, according to her, the authorities deliberately do not allow for elections.

«About the characters you mentioned. You want to have the squares ran dozens of Saakashvili (ex-President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili. – «GORDON»)? Those whom you have named, is Saakashvili, Russian edition only. And you want those Saakashvili destabilized the situation in the country? You want we have experienced from one Maidan to another? Earlier, answering questions about Navalny, the Russian President also avoided references to the names of the opposition.

The Russian presidential election will take place on 18 March 2018. Putin will go to elections as the independent candidate.

Navalny announced the decision to participate in the presidential elections in December 2016. He said he goes to the polls «program on how to make Russia a fair and modern.» Chairman of the Central election Commission of the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova said that Navalny may take part in the presidential elections in 2018, but only if it will remove a record or to change the law.
