Denmark first in the world to appoint a digital Ambassador

Denmark will become the first country in the world that will appoint the so-called digital Ambassador. The country’s leadership considers it necessary, after all, technology giants like Google and Apple now have more influence than many countries. This was announced by the Minister of foreign Affairs of Denmark, Anders Samuelsen in an interview with Politiken.

«These companies have become something of the new States, and we have to respond to it,» said Samuelsen.

The Ambassador who is not yet appointed, will work toward improving relationships with American technology companies that have much larger incomes than some of the countries with which Denmark has a traditional diplomatic relations.

The foreign Minister cited data from the Financial Times, which indicate that the market value of Apple and Google is so huge that if companies were countries, they almost could qualify for inclusion in the G20, the 20 largest economies in the world.

«Of course, we will support our traditional activities through which we support our relations with other countries. But we just have to have closer relations with some of the companies that influence us,» said Samuelsen.

Denmark benefits from a coordinated lobbying effort aimed at the world’s largest technology companies. Last week Facebook announced plans to build a new data center in Odense. Foreign Ministry said that the agreement with Facebook is the result of three years of undercover work.
